Primary Function
Responsible for assisting the Dry End Crew by completing daily tasks as directed by the Dry End Supervisor. Fifth Hand is an operator 2 position.
Basic Requirements:
Safety
· Understand and observe all plant safety rules.
· Must be able to perform this job safely and actively participate in all safety programs. Understand your surroundings and the potential dangers within your work areas.
Operations
· Perform duties as assigned by Dry End Supervisor.
· Production employees will occasionally have to work overtime. As with all positions at the plant, overtime is mandatory and regular and predictable attendance is an essential factor.
· The job procedures and requirements are applicable for the continuous operation of the Mill organization. The operator must remain on the job until the end of the shift and be relieved by the incoming position (applies to the coverage positions).
Job Procedures and Requirements:
· Demonstrate the ability to prepare cores per instruction from the winder operator while accurately reading the machine schedule.
· Assist Winder Operator in the performance of his/her duties per winder operator’s instruction.
· Assist Winder Crew with splices, threading the winder, and kicking out rewound rolls.
· Demonstrate the ability to safely and properly tape down finished paper rolls, insert core plugs, identify various grades of finished paper, and install endcaps (when required).
· Must be certified to operate the stretch wrap installation crane and perform daily inspection.
· Demonstrate a basic understanding of MDIS and Ignition.
· Assist Dry End Supervisor in reel change-ups.
· Assist in Dry End Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
· Respond immediately and perform all duties as required during paper breaks, including but not limited to:
o Machine Floor: Clear paper from the paper machine, turn dryer sections on/off as appropriate and pick up hay in aisle
o Basement: Clear hay out of ropes, catwalks, off floor and place on broke conveyor. Clean/hose the t-pee.
· Review Visual Work Instructions (VWI) and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) for tasks pertaining to the 5th hand position.
· Perform all wash-up and other duties as directed by the Supervisors and Foremen.
· Perform end of shift housekeeping responsibilities including but not limited to the following: empty core dumpster, clean up core cutter area, and empty all dry end trash bins.
· The above duties are applicable for the continuous operation of the Mill. The Fifth Hand must remain on the job until the end of the shift and be relieved by incoming Fifth Hand.
· Sometimes the Production employee will have to work overtime. As with all positions at the plant, overtime is mandatory and regular. Predictable attendance is an essential factor.
Qualifications:
· Be able to perform the essential physical requirements necessary for this position.
· Demonstrate ability to safely operate a Fork Truck and Bobcat. A valid driver’s license is required.
· Promotes, maintains, and enforces safety to promote an accident-free operation.
· Incorporates a safe-minded approach to all aspects of the department, including the process improvement initiatives.
· Self-starter and the ability to handle multiple priorities effectively.
· Business-minded, people and results oriented, with a strong emphasis on safety and quality.
· No significant performance/ attendance infractions within the last 36 months.
· Must be able to perform all tasks required in the subsequent positions
Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
