Paper Mill Department Manager

Overall Accountability:
Leads the Otsego Paper Mill Department under the direction of the VP of Manufacturing, Paper.
Nature and Scope:
Provides overall management and direction of the paper mill.
Responsible for training, motivating, and maintaining a high level of safety for all department employees to ensure an efficient operation, consistent with overall company safety objectives.
Maintains a complete safety and housekeeping program and delegates execution of this program to paper mill team members.
Responsible for ensuring the department follows all USG bulletins and meets the customer board plant’s needs and expectations.
Utilizes a thorough knowledge of all equipment, operating techniques, and paper industry guidelines.
Directs efforts in the upkeep and upgrade of the paper mill through capital, infrastructure, non-routine and maintenance activities.
Develops and maintains a comprehensive training program that provides a flexible and efficient workforce while at the same time providing advancement opportunity to all employees. Recognizes employees’ strengths and development needs. Provides coaching and motivates employees on an individual and team basis.
Has the ability to develop successful relationships with manufacturing, engineering, tech services, research, sales and customers to determine product specifications and maximize product reliability and acceptance. Possesses highly developed technical skills with an ability to propel the mill forward by recognizing and implementing advancements in automation and technology.
Develops a thorough succession plan for all leadership positions in the mill.
Plays an active role in the support and implementation of the RPM, LSS, Capital, safety model programs, cost reduction and quality improvement programs.
Department Organizational specifics:
The paper mill is a 4-shift operation producing all grades of manila and newslined products utilized by USG board plants. The plant produces 55 to 65% of the USG paper supply requirements.
Current staffing is as follows:
2-Production General Foreman
4-Shift foremen
4-Lead Supervisors
64- Hourly personnel
Accountabilities:
Implement the safety and housekeeping program and ensure the development and enforcement of effective safety and housekeeping standards throughout the department.
Implement the quality program and direct departmental efforts to improve process and product uniformity.
Meet production requirements while achieving cost goals.
Ensure that departmental personnel effectiveness is maximized, morale and productivity are good, and all EEO rules and regulations are met.
Maintain the physical condition of the paper mill through effective maintenance, capital projects, and infrastructure projects.
Maintain an effective training and development program to maximize supervisory and organizational effectiveness.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Paper Science with prior experience as a USG department manager preferred.
Strong leadership, communication (written and verbal), decision making and employee relations skills within a diverse workforce. Supports all change initiatives with enthusiasm and involves others in the change process.
Knowledgeable of safety compliance programs with a strong emphasis on safety and housekeeping. A proponent of innovative change in safety with a propensity for motivating employees to new levels of safety awareness and engagement.
Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to make quick, accurate decisions. Strategic thinker with a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished.
Possesses the desire to actively manage and develop others; provide guidance and recognition in conjunction with USG’s philosophy of talent management and retention. Has the capacity to relate well to employees at all levels and effectively build rapport.
Must have demonstrated abilities to operate within a planned budget and proven record of accomplishing tasks on schedule.
Possesses a thorough understanding of company policies and practices.
Is able to handle multiple concurrent projects and prioritize tasks.
Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
